BACKGROUND SCREENING

Background screening is GUARANTEED to save you time and money when hiring employees!

Background screening in conjunction with some basic interviewing and on boarding techniques is the easiest way to minimize employee theft and turnover – this is a fact, no one can dispute it yet for some reason a significant number of retailers, wholesalers, and distributors don’t run background checks or if they do they run ineffective and or illegal checks.

I am not speaking hypothetically or based on information I have read but on real world experience and feedback from my clients – ROG Screening & Selection is a pre employment screening company which I am one of the partners in and here are some real client insights:

Question 1: Why don’t retailers run background checks?
  1. They don’t think they are effective

  2. They think they are expensive

  3. They feel they are difficult to do and take too long to get results

Answer:
  1. Proper background screening is highly effective

  2. Depending on what you want to run and where you are located a screen on a clerk will cost between $18 to $35 dollars

  3. Running a background screen takes about five minutes, is very easy to manage, and many search results are returned within 10 minutes

Question 2: I talk with local folks, the town police and I look online to see if there are any issues why should I pay for background checks?
Answer:

You are missing out on so much information that could affect your hiring decision such as social security confirmation, sex offender status, and crimes committed in other counties and states.

Example 1 – The 20 year old applicant who two years ago went across state lines and robbed a liquor store or beat up his girlfriend – your current sources may not provide this information.

Example 2 – The clean cut 30 something year old who has lived locally for the last few years and maybe was even born in the area but had left for 5 years and while away was a drug addict who stole to pay for their drugs and just came home after getting out of jail or rehab.

These are the types of situations we have actually had reported to us by our clients when they call or email to say “thank you – you saved me from making a really bad hire”

Question 3: I have a background screening provider why should I talk with another one?
Answer:

Just like any other vendor you always want to make sure you are getting the best quality of products, the newest offerings and paying a fair price for the services so why would a screening provider be any different. On a regular basis we have clients who switch to us based on searches their old provider never told them about, quicker results, better customer service and cost savings.

Final Thoughts:

If you are not doing background screening today through a true background screening company please find some other retailers or suppliers that you know and ask them if they run background checks. If they do find out who in their company runs the process and talk with him or her to find out how helpful the process is for them in avoiding bad hires – I think you will be surprised at just how many folks have positive screening experiences.

If you are using a background screening company today and you have been with them for a while without looking at other options it may be worth the time and effort to see if you could be getting more information, better information, quicker results, and possibly be paying less.

Disclaimer:

While I realize that this column may come across as something of an infomercial that is not my intent. I felt that if I did not write this with you the reader understanding that this is something I experience and live everyday it would be less impactful. While I of course feel very strongly about the services, support and pricing ROG Screening & Selection offers to our clients I would be less than truth full if I did not say that there are a lot of very good high quality providers of screening services in the marketplace.
